why dolly?

The story of Dolly begins with a piece of sour candy, a bored little girl, and a dad with rough, careful hands.
At some point just past my toddling days, I was bored and tired at a—fascinating, I’m sure—zoo. At some point just past tolerating my whining, my dad slipped me a piece of candy. The thing about candy, though, is that it can only keep a child engaged for as long as they choose not to bite down. (In my case, next to no time at all.)
Whining resumed, my dad took the wrapper and folded it up like an accordion, urging me to watch as if he were a magician as he tied a knot and fanned out the top and bottom into—TA-DA!—a little dolly.
It blew my mind. It kind of still does, and I take a particular delight in grabbing spare wrappers and gifting little dolls to my friends knowing full well they’ll have no real use for them. One of the greatest joys of my life, really.
The point is, those candy wrapper dolls have since served as a reminder that anything has the potential to be interesting and beautiful as long as you’ve got a little bit of patience and careful, transformative fingers. I tend to carry that sentiment with me for all things, but especially for my design work, where I’ve found the philosophy translates quite well.
The serendipitous bonus is that a dolly is also a tool, a rudimentary vehicle for transporting all that is heavy and awkward and unrefined. As a designer, I aspire to be the vehicle that transports your ideas where you want to take them but might not have the means to entirely on your own.
So hand over your heavies, awkwards, and even ‘unrefineds,’ just remember to call me Deeya, not Dolly!
